This course will explore strategies, techniques, and the theory involved in effective teaching in order to improve student learning. With an emphasis on interaction and collaboration, participants will explore the many facets of creating and delivering a course in the health sciences and developing a plan to assess its effectiveness. This interdisciplinary course is designed for students in the health professions who treat patients. The course will provide a broad overview of the legal issues that will impact their professional practice every day. Students who complete this course will learn how to determine if there is a provider-patient relationship; how to obtain the appropriate consent; when it is permissible or required to disclose protected health information; the legal requirements of medical records; how to avoid lawsuits; how to deal with patients who are dying and their families; the legal issues of treating patients with communicable diseases, the legal issues of treating patients who have a mental illness; business aspects of a health profession; and prescribing practices. Students will learn core content knowledge about how the conditions in which people live, work, and play impact health outcomes.
